The charm and attractiveness of the suburbs south of Chicago are often overlooked, especially by those of Chicago’s north side; it’s a battle that has been and will be waged for some time. But whatever your thoughts concerning the south suburbs of Chicago, it is tough to argue that the southern suburbs are among the most appealing in Chicagoland. Historic forts, sprawling homes, old churches, forgotten cemeteries, landmark schools, beautiful parks, Indian trails, art galleries, architectural surprises, ghostly tales…you’ll find all this and more to Chicago’s south.
Many of the suburbs to the south are old farming communities, settled in the mid-1800’s, that have turned to industry as valuable land was slated for residential neighborhoods. The old town centers have remained, and many have recently gone extensive revitalization and restoration programs. Wandering from mom-and-pop shops to a quaint diner, tavern, or bakery, and finally to the inevitable ice-cream parlor is a great way to spend an afternoon. The southern suburbs, unlike Chicago’s newer suburbs, are still accessible by foot. This trait has blessedly kept the proliferation of the dreaded “strip mall” at bay, and solidified community charisma that has inhabited this area for well over a century.
Many of the southern suburbs are flanked by forest preserves, golf courses, or the nearby lakeshore and dunes. Metra services the south suburbs, as does the Pace bus system. There are plenty of expressways leading into Chicago from the south, as well as out and away for quick getaways up the Michigan shoreline, or south to Springfield, St. Louis, or Indianapolis.
