The Hyde Park/University of Chicago area is built on diversity. This area’s residents are proud of the fact their neighborhood is like no other in the city. It has evolved into a place where the classically educated and the streetwise bump elbows on their way to a dinner of comfort food, outdoor chess match, or lecture on metaphysics at the University of Chicago. The Rockefeller memorials and Frank Lloyd Wright architecture sit shoulder to shoulder with neglected old mansions.

Rockefeller memorials and urban neglect, Frank Lloyd Wright masterpieces and abandoned row houses — these are examples of the Hyde Park/University of Chicago mixed character. History was made here when the first sustained nuclear chain reaction occurred at the University of Chicago. Meanwhile, the original Monsters of the Midway (the University of Chicago football team) passed the pigskin on the fields of 59th Street. But despite supplying the first Heisman Trophy winner, Hyde Park is now virtually a sport-free neighborhood. The area north of 51st Street has been home to people such as Muhammad Ali and Louis Farrakhan. This area is the jewel of the South Side and is a wonderful place to spend a day.
