The Andersonville/Rogers Park area is found south of Uptown and north of Wrigleyville and Lakeview. Situated along the Lake, it’s a straight shot south to downtown and the Loop via either Lakeshore Drive or the El.
Andersonville is a beautiful, ethnic neighborhood that has blossomed with small upstart boutiques, fitness clubs, and specialty stores. The area is proud of well-preserved landmark homes; in fact, not a single home facade on the north side of West Farragut Avenue has been altered since the quiet street was developed in 1920.
Rents in Andersonville relatively cheap, especially for such a beautiful little community, hopefully it will continue to evade the contractor’s wrecking-ball that has been so prevalent to the areas to the south.
From Devon north to Evanston (Howard Street) and from the lake west to roughly Western Avenue, Rogers Park is home to Loyola University's Lake Shore campus. Northwestern University isn’t far to the north (Evanston), and the area draws more than its fair share of students. Some alternative theater, health food restaurants and a revival cinema make this an interesting neighborhood, especially for those who remember (or wish they could) the '70s. There are many vintage apartment buildings and as you go farther west you’ll come across more large, old homes.
Devon Avenue gets more interesting as you travel west, with some of the city's best ethnic cuisine. This is the Indian area of Chicago, and well worth a visit.
